Since updating to 6.x-1.17, I've been experiencing a server delay of 30-50 seconds following submission of any updated Biblio node. (For reference, I have ~15,000 Biblio nodes.) I found issue 1279496 (which dealt with the 7.x branch), and my problem appears to be identical. Unselecting the "Automatically delete orphaned authors" box fixes the problem. It seems like somehow, the fix to the problem implemented in 6.x-1.17 actually seems to have created the problem for me where it didn't exist before.

I think the suggestion (in that issue) of using cron to clean orphaned authors is probably the best idea for cases like yours which have very high node counts.
