I recently posted a theory on advertising for small websites at drop.org. In brief, my suggestion is to add a block for the catalog module that randomly displays a product from the catalog on every page within a site.
I don't know if there is any real financial benefit for site owners to do this, but would love to try it.

al commentedIf you do create a module that does this, please make sure it supports taxonomy properly, so that I can have it do ads just for a particular type of product.
That way, I can create a taxonomy branch that is used for external site adverts, but patch catalog.module to hide it on my product listings.

Bèr Kessels commentedAmazon, Powell etc already do this.

Prometheus6 commentedBefore I move this back to the Catalog project, was this supposed to go to the amazonitem module?

Bèr Kessels commentedcatalog is dead, not? If not, would it fit in our amazon bundle?

Prometheus6 commentedOkay. It struck me a strange because the request goes back a year and a half, and an ad block was on the list of things we wanted already.

Prometheus6 commentedThis project will be replaced in 4.6 by Amazon associate tools. The included module has the catalog block, and a node type that deals properly with taxinomies.
