alternative to username & password
Hey guys,
Amazing to see the drupal forum so busy this week...good to see I'm not the only one putting in a few hours during the holidays.
Quick general question re: username & password.
Almost every website with content of any decent value has a login procedure for visitors..some are pay per view, others are free membership. Bottom line is that people have to remember a huge amount of username/password combinations, unless they are using the same one for every login at every site.
Just wondering if anyone out there has come across an alternative to username/password & cookies?
It's a tough question, I know. And it's probably the reason why username/password logins are so standard..i.e. there is no alternative. Just wondering on the off chance anyone here has come across/thought of an alternative.
Cheers
Jason

I suppose you could
I suppose you could authenticate using IP addresses. O'Reilly's Safari authenticates this way in some cases. At Purdue we have a campus agreement with O'Reilly that allows any computer on the campus ip's (they're all public) to access all the content.
Oh yeah, and things like hardware configuration like the MS product activiation thing, but you would need activeX or a Mozilla plugin for that. It's possible though.
It's a tough question indeed
But there are actually a lot of options being hammered out.
What you're really talking about is persistent identity on the web.
You might look into SXIP, for which there is a Drupal module, and iNames from Indentity Commons.
There's TypeKey, but I think it's proprietary for MT users, which is similar to M$'s Passport.
