I do have a simple question.

It supports 3 columns layout and can be 2 columns if you disable the right sidebar.

I'm a newbie and I'm quite certain this is rather elementary; but how does one enable the sidebar?

Go to /admin/build/block and select items under Region to place blocks on the right sidebar. The sidebar will be disabled if there are no items selected for the sidebar region.
