Is there any way to mass delete references?

You can filter, select then delete numerous entries on the "admin/content/node" page. If you want to get rid of them all, use the module un-install feature.

The problem with deleting them with admin/content/node is that the author names stay in the database (as I found out the hard way: #1094624: Why not store author names in lastname, firstname format (with comma?)). A mass delete might be a nice feature to add.
