I have used previous versions of Drupal before and always had to add the pathauto module on to rename a URL. It was this module that I thought took the q= out of the URL too.

Now in version 7.xx you dont need to add the pathauto module as everyone has the option to rename a URL. But it leaves the q= in the URL. Can anyone help?

you just need to enable clean url's

/admin/config/search/clean-urls

That should get you sorted. :-)

Thanks for such a quick response!

Does anyone know why my URL also contains the name of the web hosting service etc? IT adds this '123reg/LinuxPackage24' and then the name of the website and the folder where my web site is held all to the URL.

Have you not paid for a custom domain and registered the DNS with your provider? Often hosting services provide a free "domain" such as you describe. That's what I'm guessing you have.

Fixed! It was something the providers' end and they fixed it for me.
