Morris Alaska radio group

agentrickard - June 5, 2007 - 22:44

The six radio stations of the Anchorage Media Group in Alaska (US), a division of Morris Communications relaunched today. The sites all run on Drupal 5.1.

Previously, Morris has launched SavannahNow.com and BlufftonToday.com on the Drupal platform. These new sites are our first radio sites and our first public launches on Drupal 5.

The sites use CCK, Views, Audio, Event, Mass Contact, Login Destination, Automatic Nodetitles and some custom modules that we wrote to support the radio group. Big praise to the folks who did the real work getting these sites launched.

Nice job.
Those sites are quite similar (all of them are really good).

One notice:
all sites are sometimes really slow (I have broadband connection, and front page loads for up to 10 s)

Tuning

agentrickard - June 6, 2007 - 13:23

The designs are meant to be similar: its a "family" of sites. (It's also a template for our myriad of other radio sites.)

Is it the front page or internal pages that are slow?

I think the slowness is simply a webserver tuning issue (it is launch day, after all). There may be some network lag from YouTube, but I don't think that would stop the page from rendering.

Yes, front pages are mostly slower than other pages.

It is possible that content from other sites (like YouTube) creates some lag, but ...

Good optimised and tuned webserver (database too) is always desired.

There are some interesting articles about that. Take look (for example) at page http://nadeausoftware.com/articles/2007/03/speed_drupal_web_site_enablin... ("Speed up a Drupal web site by enabling MySQL query caching").
Also, take look at http://2bits.com/articles/drupal-performance-tuning-and-optimization-for... where you can find a couple of links for "Drupal Performance Tuning and Optimization for large web sites".

loading delay

Takes about 5 seconds before anything shows up. It's not terrible, but could be a lot quicker.

Lag

agentrickard - June 10, 2007 - 14:34

That lag is likely caused by external ad-serving and user-tracking JavaScript.

FireFox's request times tells me that first response from the server is less than 0.6 seconds. But loading and rendering the JS and the YouTube files causes some latency.
