Should stick with the default of showing text, but with the option to not display text.

Sorry for the delay. I wasn't subscribed to all issues of the project, so I didn't see this.

I tested it and everything works as it should. Committed and pushed to 7.x-1.x: http://drupal.org/commitlog/commit/314/84b3ac2069deaf4058995c81abd80ff98.... One minor change before doing that was changing the user facing text of text_alt: %text_alt to text if no image: %text_alt.
