I have just tried, and been refused permission, to contact a user, but this is the first attempt since Monday. I was refused permission when trying to send the email I’d already composed.

Of course, as a user myself, I applaud having the limit – I wondered If the count included viewing the user details or tracker? I used these to get an indication of the person I was contacting. Does the count increment with a page refresh of the same user?

Has the limit been implemented recently? as I did not encounter the problem on Monday.

If there is an issue here, I would be pleased to contribute a patch.

Not sure of the component

Seems as though viewing user details counts as one, viewing user contact counts as two and sending the message counts as three. So if you’ve viewed another user, or a tracker page, or maybe even refreshed one of these? you won’t be able to send your message for an hour.

I would suggest checking the count when contact tab is viewed, and ‘incrementing’ when sending the message.

Isn't this because we are running behind the Squid reverse proxy? Hence all requests come from the same IP address (the proxy) rather than the user's actual IP address.

This issue has a fix for it http://drupal.org/node/142773 but it was committed for Drupal 6. Not sure if killes backported it to Drupal 5. I don't think he did.

No, I am waiting for somebody to supply that patch...

that would make sense ... so i guess all the IP bans on drupal.org are moot also. yikes. for anyone who has privs, see http://drupal.org/admin/user/rules. that list is worthless right now.
