I am having multiple problems trying to get captcha to work. It looks like others are having problems too. Has anyone considered using MyCaptcha from
http://heine.familiedeelstra.com/mycaptcha-download

It was easy to install, and worked perfectly. Is there any reason why I should not use MyCaptcha?

Yes, the latest version of the Captcha module (2.1) has a few bugs that are slowly going away. A little while ago, however, I found out about reCAPTCHA and then put together the reCAPTCHA Drupal Module </selfplug>. Even though it's based on the Captcha 2.1 API, it still seems to work pretty well. Give it a try and post some issues into the captcha issue queue! Thanks a lot, and good luck.

Yes, I tried recaptcha. I've installed captcha-5.x-2.1 and recaptcha-5.x-1.0, and have selected recaptcha for anonymous comments. But I get this error message.

Fatal error: Cannot use string offset as an array in modules/captcha/captcha.module on line 169

It is discuessed here http://drupal.org/node/142830

Seems captcha need to be working - error free - before recaptcha will work.

I'm in the process of updating to 5.1, mainly to get rid of the 150 spam comments per day. It's really annoying that TextImage and CAPTCHA don't play with each other, these modules are extremely important! So reCAPTCHA is really a welcome change - it simply works. I love it, thanks!

Is there any reason why I should not use MyCaptcha?

One reason I can think of is that the module is not on Drupal.org, so you will not get update notifications when using the update status module. You will need to decide how much weight that reason has.

I worked for several hours trying to get the Captcha/Text Image/Form Collect & Form Store modules working together. Although I was successful I found it very cumbersome. Also, even after getting it to work, I still was not happy with the position of the captcha questions.

I downloaded & installed MyCaptcha & it simply worked. That's my two cents for what it's worth.

Great zot.

I was trying to get Captcha and Teximage (heck, just Captcha) to work, and based on this glowing recommendation of Recaptcha, I disabled the former two, installed/enabled Recaptcha, and booyah, it worked! :-D

Very pleased here with Recaptcha.

Did you mean Mycaptcha (not Recaptcha)?

I also couldn't get captcha+recaptcha to work so I uninstalled both and now use mycaptcha which worked immediately.

I got Captcha to work OK, using versions current at this date.

I got frustrated when the obvious wasn't documented for mte: how to add a captcha point?

but it was easy: turn on Form-collect, visit newsletter subscritpion (the form i wanted a captcha on), turn off form-collect. Go to admin/captcha - there was the form under captcha points. turn it on, select the type of captcha - all worked!

I can't get captcha to work with user registration but I suspect that is because i already hacked user registration to add my own anti-spam :-D

I'm sticking with captcha because (a) it is a drupal project and (b) I use captcha-riddler (text-image captchas introduce browser/css issues)

A bug in captcha was disabling user/password !! so i went to MyCaptcha.
bug is http://drupal.org/node/153437, looks like it is close to a fix. I may go back to captcha again later for the above reasons....

With regards to reCAPTCHA, I just had it installed and it seems really nice (my site is not live yet).
What I'll like to have is to get the reCAPTCHA box to be positioned just before the preview button,
and not atop the whole comments box. I could not find any admin setting to do this.

Anybody?
