I'm looking into using entityreference to reference file entities running under the file_entity module. This is the convention for files uploaded using the media module.

No success so far. I'm seeing a message 'Do something on load'. Any info welcome.

update: I'm now getting quite a bit of success using the native media browser setup in the media module for this, so I don't think I will need to pursue the route of using Entity Reference here. The file entity module seems to be handling referencing and original authorship properly.
