When I save my access control settings for a content type, I get a drupal message saying that "Permissions have been successfully rebuilt" (see attached image). The permissions haven't actually been rebuilt. One tip-off is that it only takes the role based access control settings a few seconds to save. Rebuilding permissions takes way longer. We still need to go to admin/reports/status and click the "Rebuild Permissions" link under the Node Access Permissions section. That will kick off the batch process.

I see two options:

  1. When saving the access control changes, also kick off the rebuild batch process. (that could get really frustrating)
  2. Change the verbiage of the message to say that permissions need rebuilt for the changes to take effect. Also include a link to kick off the rebuild batch process.

This appears to be a major issue for the content_access module. Plenty of examples of people getting burned by permissions not being rebuilt:
