I have configured two languages now and this works as expected. However, the language switcher does not appear, while it is included in the default site template panel: in the header of the web-channel.

fabsor CreditAttribution: fabsor commentedYou have to configure how you want your language to be identified, Drupal has various ways of doing this, and the URL is only one of them.
go to admin/config/regional/language/configure and enable "URL" for content translation and you should see the language switcher.
