So I've finished installing Drupal 5.1 and been kicking the tires for close to a week now. It's not public-facing, but I'm mainly interested in doing a mock-up before trying to set up a production site which only kinda sorta has the features I'm looking for. As much as possible, I don't want to install 3rd party software, eg, vBulletin, phpBB, SMF, if I can at all avoid it. I'm fine with adding modules and themes, that sort of goodness.
I look at the forum I have by default and am also looking at the forum installed on Drupal.org and see some clear differences. Similarly, I've seen other nice features that I wish my install had. More to the point:
1. What module is Drupal.org using for their Forums?
2. What module (theme?) is Drupal.org using to get those tabs in the top-right corner, ie, "Support", "Handbooks", "Forum", "Downloads", etc?
I also have a sense there are other non-standard features that I haven't quite identified (possibly an improved user registration module?), so unless someone happens to know offhand....
Btw, surely this would be a FAQ? I didn't see an appropriate post pinned to the top of this forum. :-/
Oh, and that sliding bar at the bottom of this text pane I'm writing in? Nice touch... I take it this is in the enhanced version of the forum? :-)
Comments
plain old drupal.org
The plain old core forum module.
The plain old core primary links menu
That's probably the plain old core profile module
Not to sound like a broken record, but that is a standard core feature too.

Drupal.org uses the core forum.module
Drupal.org uses teh bluebreeze theme that is unavailable to the community for branding reasons. However, The tabs are actually primary links, and there are many contrib themes that have these as well. see: Freindselectric
user registration is enhanced through the profile.module which is part of core
All of these are indeed FAQs and are listed in the handbook, under the link : Themes and modules used on Drupal.org = http://drupal.org/node/27367
Bluebeach
Just a minor correction... It's bluebeach. Bluebreeze is a very nice theme in contrib, though.

Thanks for the clarification. I knew what I meant, my fingers didnt play along : )
My Drupal branding contribution ;)
Personally, I believe that www.drupal.org should release to the community their prized theme. In fact, it shoul gradually evolve into a theme an a look and feel to end and kill all other themes and look and feels. Oh yes, I have read somewhere how it has to be propriatary but to be honest I can not remember exactly why.
I think it had something to do with uniqueness and branding of Drupal and how all of that propriatery value would be lost because if all of a sudden everyone started using it. Now, let's stop and think for a moment. OK, LET'S ALL STOP AND THINK, SHALL WE ;?)
If that is indeed what I read then is that not the same as saying that Drupal sites shall be built with themes through which one should not be able to recognize across a room that a given site is Powered by Drupal. OK, LET'S ALL STOP AND THINK ONCE AGAIN, SHALL WE ;?)
So, if each and every site that was Powered by Drupal, was to look exactly the same, would that add to or take away from Drupal awareness and Drupal brand ;?)
P.S. Where do I check in this branding module - a non development - core contribution ;?)

Hmm...
If every web site looked like Coca Cola's, would that improve Coke's brand awareness? I doubt it and would probably hurt. Likewise there are sites that I have seen that are powered by Drupal that the community would be better off not being associated with.

Beuty of being able to argue both sides ;)
>> If every web site looked like Coca Cola's, would that improve Coke's brand awareness?
Absolutely and especially if every beverage distributor looked like Coke.
In fact, are they not doing just that by supplying retailers with all sorts of such branding materials ?
>> I doubt it and would probably hurt.
How can you not believe in the power of association ?
>> Likewise there are sites that I have seen that are powered by Drupal that the community would be better off not being associated with.
When it comes to that power of association, our end users (the web sites crafters of the world) are more than capable to differentiate. If the site "visually looks like Drupal" then they will positively think of Drupal, no matter how leude or unprofessional it may be in other ways.
Your point would be most valid if our end users were Joe Public off the street.

Huh?
Your post doesn't make a lot of sense. At any rate, Bluebeach is a branding for this site, not for Drupal the CMS. Drupal already comes with Garland which makes any out of the box or minimally modified Drupal site quite recognizable.
I agree with the decision not to release Bluebeach. This site should have something unique and not look like hundreds of other Drupal sites out there.

So, do not follow in my foot steps. ;)

And the difference is ?
Perhaps we have too many divisions that are already diluting the brand that you are trying so hard to preserve.
>> Drupal already comes with Garland which makes any out of the box or minimally modified Drupal site quite recognizable.
OK, this is an excellent counter argument.

Do we keep going back to Joe Public arguments because we are forgetting who the audience of this site is. IMO, most of the visitors to this site would rather that it looked like all of the other ones, if it meant that all of the other ones would be that much more recognizable to them (: minus your Garland point :) and if you do not agree with me then let's ask them. ;)

drupal.org used to use a standard theme
Up until about 2 yrs ago, drupal.org used the standard default core theme (bluemarine at the time).
It got very difficult for drupal.org to stand out from hundreds of other (mostly crappy throwaway) sites, and the powers that be decided to give drupal.org a unique theme. It got unanimous positive feedback and probably helped kick start Drupals successful marketing and improved image. Drupal has grown an awful lot since that happened. If anyone thinks Drupal is geeky now, they should've been here a few years back.
I don't think moving drupal.org back to the default core theme would gather much support (especially from anyone with any say in the matter), and you're pretty much the only person I've heard arguing for that.

Whoa, and thanks!
Hey all, many thanks for the helpful pointers! Especially VeryMisunderstood with the pointer to the needed FAQ.
Didn't mean to instigate a tempest in a teapot, although it does clarify that maybe this question has been asked a number of times before. Sorry about that, chief!
Not trying to be a total copycat, although I'll admit to having experienced some pain trying to nudge my Drupal install in the right direction.
To be honest, I've got Drupal installed and I've got Joomla installed. I'll play with one for a while, get fed up from running into one limitation or another and then switch over to the other to see what new discoveries I make. (I even gave SilverStripe a bit of a go before learning that it had a somewhat different design goal in mind.)
Maybe it's time to pounce on Amazon.com and spring for one of the Drupal books. I didn't think it would be necessary to start cracking open HTML and CSS files to mould Drupal into what I want, but....
All things considered, I've definitely been having some *phwoar* moments with both products. :)
Cheers.
One other forum-specific question (for now)
One thing I'm curious about is how the replies to this thread (to use an example) each have a container drawn about each of them. Not so with my forum.
Is this an attribute of the site-wide theme?

Choose the path of least resistance.
That's the theme
ie CSS borders plus whatever tricks are used to do the rounded corners (there are zillions of tutorials for rounded corners on the web). Pretty much anything fancy looking like that is just CSS. And you can inspect the CSS used on drupal.org yourself - you just don't get to see what the PHP templates contain.
Modules only really add/change functionality - themes are for how the site looks. Drupal does a pretty good job of keeping the two areas separate.
