We have successfully pulled together the logistics, funding, and developer support needed to hold our first worldwide Drupal conference this year. Please visit the event details page for more information, and feel free to discuss the event in this forum.

I'd love to go but can't. But can I suggest that an effort be made to record the event so we can listen asynchrously over the web? An effort should be made to ensure the sound quality is decent. That wasn't the case with the recording of Dries in BC.

It'd be ever so great if there were a good qualitiy recording. Perhaps if there is a P.A. system available at the event, someone could plug the audio-out to a lap-top's audio in and we'd be sure to hear all the speakers clearly.

Then a little mp3 conversion, and a series of blog posts including links to the audio files... and you have a podcast.

I too would love to attend, but I just did a quick check on ticket prices and for some reason air canada wants to charge @$4000CDN (a little pricey for an afternoon of geeking out with you all).

I checked prices, only $500 to $600USD round trip. Might definitely be worth a trip to Boston if you are going to save that kind of money.

Steve Dondley’s picture

If someone plugged a standard microphone into a laptop and placed it near the speaker that would probably do it, too.

There's a 99% chance I'll be going Air Canada (leaving YYZ)... while I haven't booked my ticket yet, when I looked originally they were only about $600CDN. Things you might want to try:

* Fly through Paris rather than Brussels (there's a high speed train Paris <-> Brussels). I'll likely be doing that - to visit family in Paris.

* Try staying over a Saturday - the extra nights in a hotel are probably much cheaper than the extra airfare.

I would be flying out of YYZ too. I noticed that staying longer drops the ticket price - but even then aircanada.com was showing $1600+. I could talk to a travel agent - they tend to be a LOT cheaper than booking direct via the web (go figure: overhead cost for selling via the web equals a number approaching zero - while prices are represented by a number approaching infinity).

Or I'll drive down to bean town and fly from there.

All seeming like a long shot at this stage.

and if this event is going to be podcasted, may I suggest bittorrent as a distribution method so the bandwith of drupal will be somewhat within normal limits

I can bring a digital camcorder and wireless lapel microphone. It would be great if (a) someone in Europe had a digital camcorder so I don't have to lug mine along and (b) if someone has a tripod.

Steven’s picture

I might be able to get a camcorder, will check. Stefan is a photographer, he might have a tripod. He's going to be taking pictures anyway ;).

Dries’s picture

A list of people who plan to attend can be seen here. If you plan to attend, enable the checkbox on your profile page (see my account > edit-tab > Drupal-subtab) and you will be added to the list.

I don't know about you but I am super excited about this. No not the conference, but the pictures on the conference page. This is one of the first times I have ever seen any of the faces behind this wonderful product. Thanks for bringing a little humanity to the venture.

I know this may sound dorky and obviouly off topic but it's just nice to see you good folks really are human beings with faces, heads even.

Have fun at the conference.

I got several images from Dries' photos of the Bryght/Civicspace/Dries Vancouver meet-up in October, featuring more Drupal people:

I think it will be nice when a during the conference a live blogging site will be setup to facilitate both the "writers' present at the conference and the community "at home" that wishes to be informed. Something like live.drupal.org with all but the node tables from drupal.org, so same layout and usertables (prefix?) and the rights to blog by the participating dropies

I'd love to attend but I cannot. a torrent of the event, maybe broken down into the individul speakers and as a whole too would be awesome and much appreciated i'm sure.

alliax’s picture

I came here to post the same suggestion after seing the conference page.
I know I won't come but I'd sure download even a 700MB file for a video of all events, like the module creation one.
I can do it with a bittorrent tracker, no problem if enough people are downloading it.

Cheers to the people in charge if this will be well done, not only photos or a vague video, ok ?

Time will tell..

Boris Mann’s picture

IF we get video of the event, we can put it on the Internet Archive in conjunction with Ourmedia.

Dries wrote this in Drupal quickies, February 2005:

Exactly two weeks from now, many of us will be at the Drupal Conference 2005 at FOSDEM'05. At the time of this writing more than 60 people subscribed so you better be there too, don't you think? Stefan, Drupal's professional photographer and long-time contributor, will be taking pictures for those who can't attend. Check the conference page for more information.

While it's great to have photos, it could be a learning experience to countless people who are in other parts of the world. Think about all of the new users that Drupal will surely pick up between this years FOSDEM and the next.

If it's a matter of money and equipment, perhaps we can throw together a donation for expenses related to renting/recording/encoding the conference?

Boris Mann’s picture

I absolutely don't have time to edit the video afterwards, though. Also, for sound, you would need at least a remote microphone. Plus, I would need a tripod. And I also don't want to run the thing *at* the conference.

So -- it's a matter of people, time, and equipment. We'll do what we can, but we don't want to promise too much upfront.

koorneef’s picture

A tripod is no problem, I've no other equipment or editing facilities though.
You can reach me by mail (contact) or by phone: +31 (0)40 27 35109 (mobile).

freyquency’s picture

I know a few film editors, so perhaps I can talk them into editing. I'll ask. I'd need it sent to me via internet (file sizes?) or postal mail. As far as actually standing there and recording it, I figure that's got to be the tough thing to ask anyone to do.

I really appreciate both of your efforts though, thank you so much.

freyquency’s picture

everything with the video is still a go?

Dries’s picture

Gerbrand, Florian and Susanne captured all Drupal presentations so video recordings will be made available!

andremolnar’s picture

I'd be willing to pay for a nice hi-rez version on DVD - say $20 including shipping ;-) I can't wait to see it - even if its only available on-line.

I just browsed the posted galleries and notes posted on the front page. Looks like it was a great time. Wish I could have been there. Looking forward to 2006 (in North America ,hint hint).

Hats off to you Dries and everyone else involved in making this year's event happen.

p.s. Is there any word about the Drupal gathering in Hungary? Nem todok nagyon jol irni vagy olvasni magyarol - szo nem nagyon kerestem a drupal.hu site-on.

freyquency’s picture

Is the editing still ok? I should be able to get a friend(s) to prepare the footage if it needs to be done. I'd be willing to share on bit torrent too, for a while. (got to love stable linux computers.)

Although the Drupal community is growing fast in Hungary, so far, we have no Drupal-only come-together. On the PHP Conference next Saturday there a Drupal vs Xaraya talk and sg. about e-commerce with Drupal.

When we were talking on IRC about next DrupalCon we thought that it would be great to not wait one year but have one late August or September in either Toronto or Hungary. This is too early to guess on this, we will see...

What I'd like to see is the code sprint made say 4-5 days long and get some actual coding done... would be great!

Potentially? August is really not very far away, however.

alliax’s picture

thank you very much for the videos, i wanted them and we got them, that's wonderful.
Some of them are not perfect (man showing something on the screen and we see only his face) but it's already wonderful to be able to follow the presentations which are very interesting.
