Can ActiveSelect do multiple selections?

One feature of a site I'm building is a website directory that contains information about organizations operating worldwide. I have two hierarchical taxonomies, one for the organization type (select one field from a hierarchy), and one for the geographic focus (select multiple fields from a hierarchy).

I've created taxonomy fields from these vocabularies which use activeselect. After lots of patching and tweaking, I've got the Organization Type working perfectly. If I select [Academic], then the three choices under it in the vocabulary appear, and I can select one of them.

I can do the same thing with Geographic Focus, but as organizations might focus on more than one country, or more than one region, I need to have the option to multiselect. In other words, I hover over Regional, and the regions show up. I want to be able to choose both Europe AND the Middle East. Instead, I can only choose one or the other.

There is a multiple selections checkbox in Content Taxonomy ActiveSelect, but it doesn't do anything. I'm not even certain if it is intended to apply to ActiveSelect.

Does anyone out there know how to solve this -- multiple selections within a taxonomy using ActiveSelect? Or are we just not quite there yet? (I think Lullabot has thought about this, but I haven't seen any follow up)
