Are there any plans to create a D6 version of it?

Unfortunately no. The group of community media organizations who are working together to develop this theme and a layer of modules with shared functionality have very limited resource. We've been putting a lot of effort into the Media modules since Knight Foundation funded an Open Media Camp back in 2009 (http://www.zivtech.com/blog/open-media-camp-media-sprint ). That camp brought many of the Drupal developers working in media together with the community media organizations that were trying to use these modules.

Because Media will only be available in D7, we're focusing all of our resources there. You can read more about how this theme is designed to work with a layer of cm_ and civicrm_ related modules at http://groups.drupal.org/community-media
