Is it possible to add a pagination control per list or per letter to the list to speed up the loading time for huge lists? (or should I be using another module for this).

I have tried Views Alpha Pager, but it doesn't seem to even paginate by alpha for non-English alphabets.

My suggestion is to file a bug report for the Views Alpha Pager. With views and this module, the nodelist module has become obsolete, at least for this advanced feature.
