My name is Marcio Reis, I am a Ross School of Business MBA student at the University of Michigan currently conducting research on top MODs. We have identified Drupal as one of the most used and influential CMS and would greatly benefit from a quick chat with you. Are you able to spare a few minutes in the next couple of days?

In particular, I'm interested in how different MODs make to increase it's usage/downloads. For instance, I saw several types of CAPTCHA mentioned on http://drupal.org/project/captcha, and I was wondering how can a MOD get their name mentioned here like these others, and which other strategies they usually adopt to become a reference.

Generally a modules usage is based on how useful it is. It also helps if the module is mentioned on the modules page (https://drupal.org/project/modules). This is because it is ordered by popularity, which further drives adoption.

Sub modules get mentioned on the front page of this module if the maintainer feels it has merit. There is no real criteria other than its usefulness. This is done either by contacting the maintainer directly or through an issue on the issue queue.
