This was suggested in #1343842: Learning Registry and the response was that the master branch was deleted instead, but when I checked out the module's code the master branch looked like it was still there for me (I'm actually not sure it's possible to delete the master branch? - but could be wrong).

I definitely found it confusing that the directory was completely empty when I first checked it out, so I do think it would be useful to add a short README.txt pointing people to the 6.x-1.x branch.
