One feature I'd love for it to have is the ability to include files in the private file system.

Thanks, Eric! I'm pretty sure the module should be able to include private files just fine as it is. In the simplest case (where private files are in sites/default/files/private) this should work out of the box. If you've put the private files elsewhere then you just need to configure the Include Field module's containing folder for includes so that it encompasses the folder where your private files are being stored. As always, please be mindful of the fact that this could also make it possible for someone to include files that should not be published.

If I've misunderstood your request or you've tried this and it's not working then please provide some more details so that I can consider it further.
