I am curious if there are any tutorials or such specifically aimed at the issues of server load, best caching practices, and load balancing across multiple servers. Has anyone written anything on this topic in regards to Drupal?

I think you mean failover

Hey there:

I think you mean failover, as there is no such term as sailover unless you are an amateur sailor! ;-)

You would use a load balancer for the frontend (think pen, pound, haproxy, f5, coyote, etc), and for the backend dbs you'd have a different setup based on which database server you used (doing a m/s configuration with mysql would give you what you're looking for).
