In the project description under "Roadmap" you write you plan a merger with the SimpleMenu module.
Is there any status update on this?

Unfortunately, neither Ted nor me had enough time to work on this merger yet. The goal is still active, but has been renamed to a broader, generic purpose: the Drupal Menu Rendering API.
