Option to send email notification to new users (created by admin)

I have to add a number of new users to a Drupal system. When the admin adds a user, no mail is sent, so I have to send a notification email by hand. Is there a hidden switch (I hope) to change this? Since Drupal can send out a notice to self-registered users, the functionality is there.
