Hi,

I'm wrapping my head around this problem for a quite while: I need a mechanism to create synonymous node titles, or more precisely: to handle exonyms and endonyms. Ideally on D6.

Real world use cases for this are everywhere, e.g. movie titles (original title, synonymous title in other countries), or person names (birth name, pseudonym, transliterated names Greek/Russian/Chinesese... and spelling in latin characters), or geographic places, scientific names for biological organisms etc.

So far it seems that Drupal is absolutely unable to give a node multiple titles with equal "weight". Primitive (and less useful) workarounds are to duplicate the node title (or segments of it) in taxonomy and to use term synonyms (does not work very well on D6, has no synonym collapsing at all; D7 doesn't even support synonyms anymore); alternatively one can fiddle with CCK fields, create a multivalue "title" text field, hide the actual node title through theming, and create the "real" node title with some values from the CCK field; however, all these approaches are pretty much rubbish as they don't integrate well into Drupal core's search, or into Views, and they cause all kind of trouble with almost any module that work with Drupal core's primite single-value-node-titles (e.g. Pathauto, Sitemap XML, Page Title etc.).

A very far fetched idea for D7 would be to build on Entity API and extend the approach from the Title module. However, this could only work in D7, and it would require a lot of coding.

Since exonyms and endonyms actually are everywhere, I assume that I am not the only one with this problem, so I'd love to hear about approaches how you solved this.

Thank you!
