Another step towards making this module easier to use would be allowing the user to define which Fill PDF template should be used by default with a particular content type. I'm not sure how useful this would be at the individual node level, but probably useful there as well. This would be similar in nature to #1526444: Webform integration: Allow specifying default Fill PDF template.

What I probably had in mind was that if one specified a node without specifying the fid in the link, it would use the template in the node type. However, this is a very old idea and not needed now that we're working on a FillPDF field. The field will also let it work with any type of entity.
