Hi,

Can someone point to on what changes one would need to make to eliminate the words "Navigation", "user" that comes at the top of the drupal side panel menus ?

If you go to Administer -> Blocks you should find the various blocks on your site listed... You should be able to click configure on a block (ie Navigation) and override the default title there. The note below the text field says to use <none> to display no title. Do this for the User login as well.
