Did a search with a few terms but couldn't find anything relating to this.
Anybody seen or heard of a module where the comments for nodes can be automatically numbered?
This is a fairly popular forum convention and makes discussion within the comments somewhat easier.

Does any such module or a hack for comments exist?

I don't believe it exists, and this may be why.

take a look at each comment on a thread that has comments. Because comments are not nodes, There really is no numerical pattern on each thread.
