Installed the dev version for D6 and it's not displaying.

I don't see anything in the source code to think it would be a positioning issue.

I'm a newb, but is this supposed to show up in a specific region (content top)? Or does it just appear on the specific content types through the template?

I don't know, I see something in the module file about region.tpl, and I thought that was D7? How does it get "automatically added?"

Well, I tried again in new fresh installation... it looks like working fine for me. it will just show in content region along with your content, though there is an option in settings with which you can detach it from content area & then do positioning. There is also options to choose on which content type it should show [ though list is bit ugly ]
region.tpl.php is used for default theme implementation of a region and is available for 7.x & 8.x only.
Well, if you can give more debug information then may be I can really be helpful to you.

Disabled the Service Links Module.

Now it shows. ;)

Ah, looks like some js issue, not sure though. I would give the combination a try too.
