It would be quite logic if the timer only counts when the node is in edit mode.
How to do that?

I don't necessarily agree that this is logical. People want to be able to start a timer and leave the page (either on purpose or by accident) without losing their timer.

If it's a matter of making sure users know there is a timer running, that's what we have the active timers block for. You can add the active timers block to the page using context in Atrium.
