It would be nice if there was an option to clone a particular content type, so one can safely experiment with creating a new template...

I thought this was possible, I guess I misunderstood what I had read last year, I will look into this as a possible feature.

There are a couple of other feature requests that are similar, #229145: Add preview option and #171648: Revisions of templates. I think these would be better then just cloning a content type. If you could just hit a preview button to test out the template would that work?
