My plan for the simplenews_statistics module:
Update the current 6.x versions to 7.x
Create automated testing for both 6.x and 7.x new versions (currently not present)
Create new features for 7.x-2.x

I have already begun with the patch for 7.x-1.x. See the issue: http://drupal.org/node/1502736
I have worked on a few patches for simplenews 7.x as well.
