It seems you can choose any Views display except the master/default display.

I think it would be useful to enable the reference of master displays.

My use case: I use View reference as the only way to print my Views. I don't want to have to create additional displays just to be able to reference the View with View reference. Besides that, the master display is the "easiest" one to create – the other display types need/offer additional settings, which are not needed for my case (Why create a page path that shall never be visited? Why add a block that shall never be placed?)

Maybe offer a configuration where you can choose which display types should be selectable at all? So one could say "My users shall only be able to select block display types with View reference", "be only able to reference master displays", etc.

Yeah I agree with you, I think the master display is the easiest to create and use with other modules (like this one), not sure why the Views developers push people into creating specific displays.
A configuration option might be a good idea too.

Just doing some research, to get a list of displays either call views_fetch_plugin_names('display') or if that doesn't work out some of the code in that function could be used to do what we want.
