Is there a way to archive chats? I see this working as a cool live comments/ shoutbox feature on a per-node basis, but that would require archiving the chats. Is this possible?

The chatlogs are on the server, but doing something with them is beyond the scope of a Drupal module. I think you'll have to request this feature on the phpfreechat site (phpfreechat.net).
