The URL changes and the content in the main area is removed, but new content is not loaded in it's place. This was tested on a base D7 install with some items added in the menu and Bartik (although I do see it working on your personal blog)

Could it be the same problem as #1563742: Deliver the whole 'content' region ?

It is most likely the same problem. There's a patch in #1570920: Content not being rendered on tabbed pages
