It seems that most modules/themes are moving towards the Libraries 2.x branch; @pirog and I are taking a look at refactoring Panopoly to follow suit. Any pointers would be welcome; I wouldn't think that this should be a difficult process, but that's without any significant discovery :)

This sounds fantastic! I just updated the install profile in -dev to use the 2.x branch. As far as I can tell, the only module that requires libraries is Views Slideshow so presumably that might require some work depending on the 1.x to 2.x upgrade considerations.
