I'm getting the same I believe... Using Drupal 5.1, I see a couple of messages at the top of my screen after enabling the module:

"The directory files/tmp/drupal_gsitemap has been created."
"Unable to load site map. Make sure your temporary directory exists and is writable by Drupal."

But then I cannot see the sitemap:

XML Parsing Error: no element found
Location: http://namke.com/sitemap.xml
Line Number 1, Column 1:

This seems to be a very common problem, but simply renaming directories does not help (I've tried a top level directory too).

Status report says:

Incidentally, I have another site, hosted by the same company, on which gsitemap works perfectly...
