One very basic feature that's still missing is to create a node from within the "Add content" window. (At the moment it's only possible to add an already exisiting node).

The "Panels create node" module that does just that. Maybe this should be merged into panels to provide this basic functionality out of the box.

Interestingly, I don't consider that basic functionality. Creating a node inside the panel is a *very* workflow sensitive process, and having it when you don't expect it is actually more confusing.

This sandbox also includes that.
