I should like to set up my sities so that casual visitors can see the front page but need to register and login to see the articles themselves.

Can anyone help?

In Drupal 7, we're using the Content Access module. This creates an extra tab for each content type (article, page, etc) and allows us to disable anonymous users from various content types. We've create two of each content type (Neighborhood Event vs. Public Event, Neighborhood Article vs. Public Article) and change the content access appropriately.
