OR facet fails for string field

I'm seeing OR facets not working at all for a text field - no search results, though the facet block itself shows the OR behaviors.

Interestingly, from the Solr interface this fails:

fq={!tag%3Dsm_field_presenter_company_list}sm_field_presenter_company_list:(Etsy+OR+Lucid+Imagination)

but this works:

fq={!tag%3Dsm_field_presenter_company_list}sm_field_presenter_company_list:("Etsy"+OR+"Lucid+Imagination")

or this:

fq={!tag%3Dsm_field_presenter_company_list}sm_field_presenter_company_list:(Etsy+OR+"Lucid+Imagination")

So it seems we need to quote string values with whitespace?
