I had unzipped few modules for Drupal v 5.1 into the modules directory a well as into sites/all/modules/ (after reading some forum posts) but the modules are still not getting displayed in the admin area, pls. guide ???

Are those modules for Drupal 5? you can check this by looking for a .info file in the module's directory.

yes, they are for drupal 5 , below is the content from one of the module info file:

have you enable the module at Administer -> Site building -> Modules (http://yoursite.com/?q=admin/build/modules)?
