how to create a view with Entity reference

Hi There,
I'm able to generate the reference but not able to create a nice view

I have the following setup:

Content types:
Artist (just title and body fields)
Paintings (which has an image filed and an entity reference field to the node type Artist, so every created painting can be linked to one artist)

Now the views:
I would like to create a view with all the artists and then associate one painting with every artist, preferable a random painting per artist.
But adding the field paintings when the filter criteria is set to artists doesn't display any paintings.
The only thing I see now is a list of artists with no paintings...

What should I filter the view on? should I use relationships? contextual filters? how does this work.
