I am reporting http://drupal.org/node/162247 to moderators because:
this page is part of the CCK Handbook specifically for Drupal 6.x and earlier, yet it does not relate to this version of CCK. I would like to draw your attention to the paragraph:

"Choose the option to 'edit' the 'story' type. Once you get to the screen where you can edit the content type, you will see additional tabs that say 'Manage fields', 'Display fields', and 'Add new field'. If you choose 'Manage fields' or 'Display fields' you will see nothing, since you have not yet created any fields, so start by selecting the option 'Add new field'."

The fact is, there is NO 'Add new field' button anywhere on this form page. This has cause many users a lot of frustration as on this occasion, as even the definitive Handbook has let them down.

The workflow is quite different to that described in the handbook and there are many pitfalls for the unwary. I must have spent a week browsing the forums and YouTube searching for the answers to my problems with CCK.

The confusion is caused by the fact that the paragraph suggests that the 'Add new field' tab is alongside the other tabs 'Manage fields' and 'Display fields' that DO exist in the usual position for tabs near the top of the page. In fact the first requirement is to visit the area near the bottom of the page. Below the 'Add' label on the left there are arranged three sets of form fields for each of three different operations:

  • New field
  • Existing field
  • New group

Clearly, the word 'Add' just above this collection of form fields is a little misleading - it is difficult to see how a user can 'Add' an 'Existing field' for example. All the more reason why good quality documentation is required here. Anyway, the workflow can only proceed once one of the three sets of fields is filled in and the 'Save' button is clicked. This takes the user to the main part of the workflow for content type creation and editing, where thankfully, things are a little more self-explanatory.

Sorry, we don't use issues to track problems with Community Documentation pages (please read the guidelines at the top when you report an issue). I added a comment to the page pointing to this issue, so others could see your report.

Please feel free to edit the page yourself and make the changes you are suggesting (that is why there are "edit" links all over it). Thanks!
