Happy birthday Drupal

Dries - January 15, 2005 - 10:25

Exactly four years ago, on January 15th 2001, I released Drupal 1.0.0. The following snippet is taken directly from the original announcement:

Today, drop.org announces the release of drupal 1.00 after an extensive period of testing. Drupal is a full-featured content management/discussion engine using Apache/PHP/MySQL and suitable to setup a news-driven community or portal site similar to kuro5hin.org and slashdot.org. Current features include discussion forums, web-based administration, theme support, an open submission queue, content management, a modularized design, PHP sessions, user management with access control and username/profanity/hostname filters, error logging, a public diary module, an affiliate site module, backend/headline generation (RSS/RDF) and much more.

Well, happy birthday Drupal!

not the wiki

Gábor Hojtsy - January 16, 2005 - 17:09

Not the wiki itself, but the wikipedia is four years old.

From wikipedia: The Portland Pattern Repository was the first wiki, established by Ward Cunningham in 1995. He invented the wiki name and concept, and implemented the first wiki engine.

lines of code

moshe weitzman - January 15, 2005 - 13:20

the number of lines of code that were added to core by year. as you can see, we are growing slowly and steadily (at least thats my interpretation). from ax's cvs monitor site

Year  Change
2000 6,152
2001 8,577
2002 6,313
2003 4,393
2004 10,312
2005 198

Well, hooray

Steve Dondley - January 15, 2005 - 13:43

I think he's a gosh-darned jolly good fellow, I tell ya. Hey, this is also Martin Luther King's birthday. He was a powerful civil rights leader here in the United States. Very fitting that Drupal should share the day with such a great communicator and powerful force for good.

Happy Birthday!

dantesca - January 15, 2005 - 17:36

Happy Fourth BIrthday and more power to you!!

May coding issues mysteriously fix themselves when you leave them
on the workbench at night along with a five-pack of the good stuff.

I thought software years

MJoyce - January 27, 2005 - 23:01

I thought software years were x4 man years.

That would make Drupal 16, time to mature after a bright start.

Belated Best Wishes

I am very excited by the potential Drupal provides for the creation of virtual community networks through which grassroots social and economic initiatives can be realized. You may have initiated a worldwide revolution Dries.

jibbajabbaboy - January 20, 2005 - 18:20

A belated happy birthday to you, Drupal. Based on Moshe's metrics, 2004 certainly was a big year in terms of change to the Drupal Core. Onward and upward!
