Since the edition alter hook was introduced since the last stable release as a backport from D7, and then renamed in the D7 branch, we should backport the rename from #1476744: Improve the edition alter hook..
Filing this as a fresh issue, since a complete backport is going to be too much work -- adding the second parameter for the edition template node would require a major rewrite of _simplenews_scheduler_new_edition() which probably isn't worth it.
