There is currently no module that allows a user to click on a link and play html5 video in a lightbox.

I cannot work out how to do this ... a google search shows thousands of people wanting this and no workable solutions as far as I can see.

What text do you want to be clickable? Could you explain your use case a bit?

I think the ideal case would be a link on the poster image. On click, the lightbox pop in with the video element and auto play.
