I am playing around with it.

I was wondering if its possible to use the jstimer as a countdown with this like the open deals countdown.

Hi,
jstimer is providing additional formatters for date, datetime and datestamp fields. Timeout field is saving the data in datetime format, so basically it won't be a problem if you switch to jstimer on a datetime field as long as you use 'auction_timeout' as the field name.
