There is apparently a Google Summer of Code (GSoC) project planning on tackling this. As written, it will produce another module that is similar to this one but maintained as a separate project. It would be nice to consolidate efforts, but it might also be worth seeing how the module goes and then consolidate once we see what works and what doesn't.
