Planet Drupal [#1580616]

How appropriate is this for the planet? http://friendly-machine.com/posts/2011/wordpress-vs-drupal

IMO, it does not meet the content requirements. I do consider this as an edge case; and as outlined on http://drupal.org/about/drupal-planet I contacted the author; my comments were deleted.

I'm the author of the post in question. The original poster makes it sound like I disregarded a genuine attempt to communicate concern with the Drupal Planet guidelines, but his original post read:

"Seriously, does this really need to be tagged for the Drupal Planet?"

It was an anonymous comment from "Timmy" using the email null@null.com. So I took it as a rude comment and guessed that the writer's primary objection was any mention of WordPress. He subsequently clarified, but was pretty obnoxious about it in the comments.

That aside, it never occurred to me that this was in any way inappropriate for Planet Drupal and aside from NonProfit, there has been positive response from the those in the Drupal community who have left comments on the post.

My blog is almost entirely about Drupal and only discusses other platforms in the context of doing a comparison. Having knowledge and discussion of rival systems is highly relevant in my view. If I'm mistaken, I welcome any clarification. I just wanted to share my perspective with you.

As I said in my comments, I had no problem with the post, only that I did not think it belonged in the Planet Drupal feed. Please know my intent was not to be obnoxious. I suspect the most objectionable comment would have been something to the effect of "apart from being written in English, it does not meet any of the criteria." Perhaps that is a bit too cheeky for someone who did work hard at crafting a thoughtful article. friendlymachine, if you were offended by my comments, I do apologize. In retrospect, a PM would have been a better approach than leaving an anonymous comment.

However, I stand by my original claim it does not meet the requirements of being included in the Planet Drupal feed:

Posts must be about Drupal in one of the following ways:

How-to. The post is about how to use a module, how to solve a use case with Drupal, how to design for the particulars of Drupal, how to get at a tricky configuration for Drupal, how to plan a project for Drupal implementation, etc.
Contrib module/theme/profile/feature announcements, preferably with some discussion or background.
Distribution release. Whether hosted, for download, etc.
Case study or project narrative. The ins and outs of the Drupal aspect of the project.
Presentation or event post. About your upcoming presentation, or notes from a past presentation. Should not be just a repeat of what's announced on the DrupalCon/DrupalCamp site, but get into it more. No need for duplicates.
Views, roadmap ideas, plans, etc. on Drupal. What you see in Drupal's future.
Posts about the Drupal community. The people, influencers, issues that concern or thrill you.
Posts should be in English since that's the language used on Drupal.org.

Again, please know I have no beef with the post or the author. I think these types of comparisons are valuable to the Drupal project and similar works were helpful to me as I was making the decision of which platform to learn. However, anyone who would be interested in a platform-specific feed does not need help assessing which one to use.

So I would request, regardless of how this issue is decided that the What is Planet Drupal and how do I get added? page be updated to more clearly address what constitutes an edge case and if this type of high-level overview is appropriate.

It will be good to get some clarification because I think your reading of the guidelines is very narrow. I believe my post qualifies under the following two points:

Views, roadmap ideas, plans, etc. on Drupal. What you see in Drupal's future.
Posts about the Drupal community. The people, influencers, issues that concern or thrill you.

Notably, my post does not have any of the characteristics of what should not be posted to Drupal Planet.

Frankly, if this post is objectionable, then any other post doing compare/contrast or discussing issues like marketing, making a business case, etc. will have to be disallowed. It will silence a topic that is important for the Drupal community to discuss. I hope you are wrong, but I will respect whatever decision is rendered.

I read the post when I first saw it today and found nothing wrong with it being in the Planet.

And we as moderators don't want to get into micro-managing what belongs in the Planet. It was about Drupal, didn't violate our policies, and had some good information.
