I tried with both versions 5.x-1.2 and 5.x-1.x-dev of the module but neither seems to install the tracker code. The module has been activated and set up with the right GA User ID. I also have tried renaming the module directory to remove the underscore, but no apparent difference. Any idea what might be wrong?

if no code is appearing in your theme footer then you're theme probably doesn't implement the $closure code.

Your quick reply is much appreciated. I tried changing to one of the default themes (Garland) and Google now reports tracking installed.
